A Song to My Fellow Diamonds

This past Friday I had the chance to attend the 59th Annual Gold Coast Fashion Awards benefiting Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s hospital.  It was an incredible event and I look forward to sharing with you more about the fabulous fashion from the show, but today I thought I’d share something else I took away from the event…a song.  You know that moment when you hear a song and you immediately light up and fall in love with it?  The kind of song that you end up listening to on repeat for the next two weekes? One of the designer’s chose one of these types of songs for their show.  I didn’t recognize it from anything, so I quickly pulled out my phone, downloaded Shazam and voulia…”Diamonds” by Johhnyswim.  The beat and sound alone was amazing, but when I got home and really gave a listen to the lyrics, I fell in love with it even more.

Last week I saw my life coach for a 3rd time.  It was a bit more challenging than the previous two sessions, but I’m hopeful that means we are making progress!  I’ve definitely noticed some changes in my outlook on life (both the big picture and day-to-day) and have without a doubt become even more self-aware.  What made this past session more challenging (and even uncomfortable) was having to write down and address the negative self-talk that saturates my thoughts daily.  Do these come up for you a lot too?  We took a look at some of these thoughts that I have on a more regular basis, the ones that hold me back from action, the ones of self-doubt, the ones that “help” me avoid change.  It was crazy that just the process of writing them down and reading them has made me realize how ridiculous they are.  This week’s task is to take note of each time these thoughts come up during a given day and then find the truth and lies in all of them…so I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes!  Do you have any tips or insight on how you bite back at negative self-talk?  I’d love to hear!!

So back to the song.  If you’ve ever struggled or are struggling with self-doubt, heartache, loss or anything other life obstacle, try setting aside 4 minutes today, give this song a listen and trust that if you keep your head up and keep moving forward, you…me…we…will all be diamonds READY to break out of here.

Happy Monday and I hope you have an AMAZING week!!

Speak soon,

Megan

Ps – If you fell in love with the song like I did and feel the need to listen to it on repeat all week, head over to iTunes.  Their whole album has really great songs, so I highly suggest checking those out too!!

Love this! Johnnyswim is a new “music obsession” of mine, and I hardly hear about them, so to see them on your blog is SO sweet! And how awesome to really address, head on, those voices and thoughts that continually hold us back. I think that it’s a constant, daily struggle to choose not to agree with those voices. Rock on, pretty lady! A great reminder for me today!

I had never heard of them before this song!! Aren’t they awesome?! Thanks so much, hope you have a great week!

  • Oh girl, if I knew how to silence those negative voices- I’d share it! I’m so happy for the new path you’re on. Scary, I’m sure… But exciting and so healthy. Sending positive vibes your way!

One of the most important exercises I did for myself was to draw photos of myself at the beginning of therapy. Each time, the photos of myself grew larger and larger, where I was able to see my self-confidence rise. It’s not an easy task whatsoever, but I believe in you and am so proud of you for doing what it takes to make yourself good.

That is so interesting! Thank you for sharing! I would have never thought to do that and how neat to be able to see the progress too! Thank you so much for your support Tomissa!

I don’t comment on your blog often, but felt the need to comment on this.

I think you know I have issues with that (based on similar past issues). I think the path to changing it differs for everyone, but I know for me stopping for a second when I have those thoughts to truly – rationally – think about the validity of them has been key. Facing the thoughts. It’s sort of like exposure therapy in a way to truly make yourself think about it and then debunk it. Wise mind (oh how I hated DBT, but Wise Mind is legit)

Thank you so much for your insight!! That’s the point I ultimately want to be at. It’s definitely uncomfortable at first to face the thought head on, but I think it’s really the only way I’m going to be able to truly move forward. I’ll have to look into Wise Mind!

Megan, you are one of the bravest people I know! It’s so hard to tune out those self doubts and negative voices in your head right?! What works well for me (but a long process and long term goal) is surrounding myself with positive people, events and activities. I also (try to) ask myself what is my intention behind what I am doing and who I am with. Is this just a habit or really adding value for me? We are such a creature of our surroundings so being in a positive environment helps you subconsciously start thinking that way. Also being positive and supportive of others (which you are amaaaazing at) – it ALWAYS comes back full circle! All easier said than done of course, but something I personally strive for. Keep up the great work and thanks so much for sharing your story. xoxo

  • Oh girlfriend – you’re such an inspiration! I have a hard time with self doubt, and not thinking I’m good enough at anything I’m doing. I just try to take time for myself, surround myself with kind people, and also try to keep myself busy! I also try to give myself a pep talk at least a few times a day :) Sending you lots of love and light your way! xx

Thank you Maya!! Thanks for all your insight! I think I could definitely use some more pep talks throughout my days:) Thanks again and hope you have a great week!! <3
